The Evidence of Us
The Evidence of Us is a visual exploration of presence, absence, and the imprints left behind by human existence. In this series, artist Marie-Chloé Duval examines the tension between individual autonomy and collective identity, navigating the fragile yet enduring structures that shape society.
Rooted in her background in criminology and sociology, Duval’s work dissects societal constructs—how they define, confine, and expose the paradox of resilience and decay. Figures emerge and dissolve within layered compositions, their fragmented forms reflecting a world in constant flux. Weathered textures and muted tones evoke erosion and loss, while luminous colors and organic marks hint at renewal, questioning what remains and what fades over time.
Incorporating symbolic elements such as architectural remnants, urban traces, and natural forms, Duval creates a dialogue between past and present. These symbols serve as evidence of human presence, mirroring the cycles of construction and deconstruction that shape both physical environments and psychological landscapes. Absence becomes presence, voids transform into spaces for memory, and each canvas becomes a vessel for the intangible forces that connect individuals to place and history.
Through The Evidence of Us, Duval offers both an intimate and collective meditation on the seen and unseen forces of human connection. Her work invites viewers to contemplate what is lost, what lingers, and what can be reimagined as society continuously unravels and rebuilds itself.
